Bill Woodson, Executive Vice President
Mr. Woodson is Executive Vice President, Head of Wealth Advisory and Family Office Services for Boston Private. He has more than 25 years of experience within financial services and joined Boston Private from Citigroup where he served as head of the Family Office Group for Citi Private Bank in North America. Prior to joining Citi Private Bank, Mr. Woodson held senior private banking and family office positions at Credit Suisse and Merrill Lynch where, among other responsibilities, he ran a multi-family office (MFO) business and managed ultra-high-net-worth and family office clients. Mr. Woodson was also a founding member of myCFO, an integrated wealth management firm started by a number of well-known Silicon Valley technology executives.
Mr. Woodson began his career in a Big Four public accounting firm as a tax professional, where he spent almost a decade providing domestic and international tax advice to ultra-high-net-worth individuals, families and closely-held businesses. He earned a master’s degree in accounting from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business and a bachelor’s degree in economics from University of California, Irvine.
Gary P. Sica, Senior Managing Director
Mr. Sica joined KLS in December 2005 after working at Wealth and Tax Advisory Services, Inc. as an experienced Tax Manager advising high net worth individuals and families on income and estate tax matters. Prior to 2002, he spent four years at Arthur Andersen, LLP, rising to the position of Tax Manager in the private client group. Mr. Sica received his B.A. degree from Villanova University in 1994, his J.D. degree from Villanova University School of Law in 1998, and his LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law in 2005. Mr. Sica is a Senior Managing Director, Chief Investment Officer and Chair of the Investment Committee.
Arthur N. Langhaus, Senior Managing Director
Prior to founding KLS in 1989, Mr. Langhaus spent two years as an Investment Banker and Vice President in the Asset Management Group at Shearson Lehman Brothers. Prior to 1987, Mr. Langhaus was Senior Tax Manager with the international accounting firm of Touche Ross specializing in the areas of individual taxation, corporate taxation and tax-oriented investments. Mr. Langhaus was Chairman of the Tax Oriented Investment Committee of Touche Ross’ New York office. He received his B.A. degree from Queens College, City University of New York in 1978 and an M.B.A. degree with high honors from Pace University Graduate School of Business in 1980. He is a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Langhaus is a Senior Managing Director and member of the Investment Committee of KLS.
Alan J. Brod, Senior Managing Director
Mr. Brod joined KLS in May 1991, after spending five years as a First Vice President in the Capital Preservation and Restructuring Group at Shearson Lehman Brothers. Prior to 1987, he spent nine years as a Tax Manager at Touche Ross specializing in the areas of individual and corporate taxation. He received his B.S. degree from New York University in 1975, his J.D. degree from University of Miami Law School in 1978, and his LL.M. from New York University in 1982. Mr. Brod is a Senior Managing Director and member of the Investment Committee of KLS.
Mark Bricker, Managing Director
Mr. Bricker joined KLS in January 2001 after working at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as a SeniorTax Advisor in the Financial Industry Service Group where he advised banks and investment partnerships on tax matters. Prior to 1996, he worked at Deloitte & Touche LLP as a tax associate in their Multinational Corporate Tax Group. Mr. Bricker graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. degree in Accounting from SUNY Albany in 1991 and received his J.D. degree from New York University School of Law in 1994. Mr. Bricker has risen to the level of Managing Director and serves as the head of the trusts and estates practice.
Jason Cain, Managing Director
Jason Cain is a Managing Director, responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive, advice-based solutions for ultra-high-net-worth clients, family offices and their professional advisors. Mr. Cain has spent more than 25 years advising families on the many aspects of designing and operating family offices including strategy, administration, multi-generational wealth transfer planning, family governance and legacy planning.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Cain was a Managing Partner with BDO USA, LLP, where he was the architect of the firm’s national family office services practice. He was responsible for the coordination and delivery of multi-family office services to entrepreneurial business owners and their families. Mr. Cain began his career as a tax and estate planning attorney in Chicago representing families in the strategic design, implementation and administration of complex structures to manage generational wealth. In 2007, he left private practice to design and manage a single family office for a Forbes 400 family. From 2011 through 2017, he built integrated wealth management services for family enterprise clients at Credit Suisse Private Bank, USA and Mirador Family Wealth Advisors, the family office division of Fifth Third Bank.
Mr. Cain received his Bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University, his Juris Doctorate from Widener University, and a Master of Laws in taxation from DePaul University.
Wade Canter, Managing Director
Prior to joining KLS in September 2016, Mr. Canter was an Executive Director at the J.P. Morgan Private Bank, where he spent five years as an Investment Specialist in the Law Firm Group. For the two years prior, he worked as a Financial Advisor at Bernstein Global Wealth Management. Previous to advising high net worth individuals and families, Mr. Canter spent nine years in investment banking. He served as a Director specializing in equity-linked securities at Barclays Capital and Wachovia Securities and as a Vice President in the Global Industrials Group at Citi. He began his career as a corporate tax attorney, practicing for two years at Shearman & Sterling. Mr. Canter received an A.B. from Duke University in 1993, a J.D. with a Concentration in Taxation from the University of California Hastings College of the Law in 1997 and an LL.M. in Taxation from the New York University School of Law in 1998.
Amanda D. Dekki, Managing Director
Prior to joining KLS in January 2011, Ms. Dekki spent seven years working at Berdon LLP rising to the position of Manager, advising high net worth families and financial entities on their tax and financial matters. She received her B.A. degree with honors from St. John’s University in 2000, her J.D. degree from St. John’s University School of Law in 2003, and her LL.M. degree at New York University School of Law in January 2012. Ms. Dekki is a KLS Managing Director responsible for client account management.
Michael T. McCarville, Managing Director
Mr. McCarville joined KLS in June 2009 after working at Goldman Sachs as a Senior Financial Analyst advising Goldman partners on their personal tax and financial matters. Prior to 2007, he spent 5 years at Wealth and Tax Advisory Services, Inc., rising to the position of Tax Manager, advising high net worth individuals and families on income and estate tax matters. Mr. McCarville received his B.A. degree from Binghamton University in 1997 and his J.D. degree from St. John’s University School of Law in 2001.
Susan Matlow, Managing Director
Prior to joining KLS in July 2013, Susan was a private client advisor at a boutique wealth management firm in New York, advising individuals on comprehensive wealth management matters. She began her career as an associate with Arnold & Porter in Washington, D.C. and subsequently was a tax counsel at Exxon Mobil Corporation and American Express Company. Susan received her B.S. degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1988 and her J.D. degree from The Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1991 and is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional.
Richard Perez, Managing Director
Mr. Perez joined KLS and Boston Private in January 2020. He has more than 20 years of experience in financial services and joined Boston Private from 40 North Management LLC, a large NY-based Registered Investment Advisor, where he served as Chief Investment Officer of the family office business. Prior to joining 40 North, Mr. Perez was a Senior Analyst at Soros Fund Management on the external manager selection team, investing on behalf of the Soros family and affiliated foundations. He joined Soros from Goldman Sachs where he was a Vice President in the hedge fund-of-funds group and Head of Research for the Tactical Trading Strategies sector. Mr. Perez earned a Master of Business Administration from The Wharton School in 2008 and a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 2000. Mr. Perez is Managing Director and Chief Strategist for investments and is a voting member of the KLS Investment Committee.
Joan Young, Managing Director, Relationship Manager
Joan Young is a Managing Director, Relationship Manager for Boston Private. She has more than 20 years of experience with ultra-high-net-worth clients and family enterprises. Prior to joining Boston Private, Ms. Young held a number of positions, including as CEO/ CIO of two multi-billion dollar family offices, and has also been an independent consultant to family offices on issues ranging from education to investment management. She has extensive relationships with family offices, multi-family offices and their trusted advisors.
Prior to working with family offices and their advisors, Ms. Young was a corporate lawyer at Davis Polk & Wardwell and served as General Counsel of Christie’s. Ms. Young also spent a number of years in investment banking, at both DLJ and the Mergers & Acquisitions Department at Morgan Stanley. She left investment banking as a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley. Ms. Young earned a law degree from Harvard Law School, cum laude, and a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, from Bryn Mawr College.
Tara Carley, Director of Client Services
Ms. Carley joined KLS in May 2006 after three years at Bear Stearns supporting Managing Directors in the Private Wealth Management Group. Ms. Carley is responsible for the training and management of the associate, portfolio accounting, and account administration groups. She also acts as a primary advisor on client accounts. Ms. Carley received her B.A. degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 2003.
Joseph W. Callaway, Jr., Director
Mr. Callaway joined KLS in August of 2004 after working at The Bank of New York as a Trust Officer in the firm’s Structured Finance Group. He was a lead relationship manager to various mortgage-backed security issuers and was responsible for various corporate trustee matters. Prior to working at The Bank of New York, he was an Associate at Wilmington Trust Company within their Bankruptcy/Default Group, also assisting on various corporate trustee matters. Mr. Callaway received his B.B.A. in Finance from Radford University and his M.B.A. from the Lubin School of Business at Pace University.
Maritza A. Chow Young, Director
Ms. Chow Young joined KLS in April 2001 after working for four years with the Blank Financial Group. She received her B.A. from Trinity College in 1997. Ms. Chow Young has received numerous promotions during her tenure at KLS, rising to the level of Director. Ms. Chow Young is responsible for client account management.
Andrew Hoercher, Director
Mr. Hoercher joined KLS as an Associate in 2012 after working at UBS Wealth Management as a Client Service Representative in the firm’s Equity Plan Advisory Group. Mr. Hoercher received his B.A. in Economics from St. Lawrence University and his M.B.A. from the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University with a concentration in Finance. Mr. Hoercher advises clients on various investment and wealth planning strategies, is the Secretary of the KLS Investment Committee, and is a member of the Boston Private 401(k) Committee.
Peter LaPlaca, Director
Mr. LaPlaca joined KLS in September 2020. He has more than 25 years of experience in financial services, most recently at Citi Private Bank, where he was an Investment Counselor advising high net worth and ultra-high net worth clients. Mr. LaPlaca has been an adjunct professor at Berkeley College since 2014, teaching Certified Financial Planner designation courses including retirement planning, estate planning and insurance planning as well as undergraduate accounting and finance.
Mr. LaPlaca received his Bachelors in Banking & Finance from Hofstra University and his MBA in Finance from Long Island University – C.W. Post. Mr. LaPlaca is a Certified Financial Planner™ and Chartered Financial Consultant®.
Meghan Van Dusen Spear, Director, Business Development
Meghan Van Dusen Spear is a Director and Head of Business Development at KLS. Ms. Spear joined the firm in 2020 with over 20 years of financial services experience. At KLS she is responsible for designing and implementing all business development programs for the firm and managing the business development group.
Prior to joining KLS, she served as Vice President and Head of Sales at Mosaic Research Management, where she worked with hedge funds and institutional asset managers on their equity research needs. In this role, she acted as a member of the executive team and oversaw all sales, client development, marketing, and partnership initiatives for the firm. She began her career in the Private Client Services division of Bear Stearns. Ms. Spear received a Bachelor of Science in Speech from Emerson College.
Andrew Vrachimis, Director
Andrew Vrachimis joined KLS in September 2020 after working at First Republic Bank for over six years as a Director and Financial Planner. In his role as a Financial Planner, Andrew engaged high net worth clients and their families in a comprehensive planning process and provided them with personalized advice to meet their objectives. Mr. Vrachimis’ focus was in the areas of cash flow and retirement planning, asset allocation, risk management, charitable giving, estate and wealth transfer planning.
Prior to joining First Republic in 2015, Mr. Vrachimis was a Senior Analyst in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department at Realogy Holdings, Corp. Mr. Vrachimis holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Finance from Lafayette College and is currently pursuing his Masters in Taxation from Rutgers Business School.
Raja Raza, Associate Director
Mr. Raza joined KLS in January 2020 after working at Ernst & Young as a Senior Analyst in the Private Client Services practice. He was responsible for providing advice to high net worth clients including corporate executives, financial advisors, small business owners, employees/retirees of Fortune 500 companies, as well as partners of the firm.
Mr. Raza received his BSc in Accounting from Oxford Brookes University (UK) and his Masters in Financial Management from University of Hertfordshire (UK) in 2014. He is a qualified chartered accountant (ACCA), an Enrolled Agent and a Certified Financial Planner™ professional.
Robert Sherman, Associate Director
Mr. Sherman joined KLS in October 2018 after working at Gerstein Fisher as a Client Advisor - Senior Tax Specialist, advising high net worth individuals on financial matters with a focus towards tax planning. Prior to 2015, he spent three years at Ernst & Young rising to the position of Tax Senior Associate in the Private Client Services practice.
Mr. Sherman received his B.S. degree from the State University of New York at Albany in 2010 and his Masters in Taxation from Hofstra University in 2012. He is a Certified Public Accountant with the Personal Financial Specialist advanced credential and is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional.
Tara D. Vagnone, Director
Tara Vagnone joined KLS Professional Advisors in 2016 after working at Brown Brothers Harriman for over 18 years rising to the position of Vice President in their Private Banking division. She was responsible for providing advice to ultra-high net worth clients including retired executives, private business owners, as well as BBH partners on complex investment, wealth transfer, tax and sustainable spending strategies.
Mrs. Vagnone received her B.S. in Mathematics from Fairfield University in 1997 and her M.B.A. from Fordham University in 2006 majoring in Finance, Taxation/Accounting.
